Department [DIRECTORATE OF INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY] Detail  Department Details Name : DIRECTORATE OF INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY Establishment : June, 2007   Introduction : NA   Objectives :                             Objectives of ICT Directorate With a view to provide efficient services for its Students, Tutors & Faculty, AIOU has established new departments and “Directorate of Information & Communication Technology” is one important new department among those. This department has been established with following objectives. 1. Technological transformation of AIOU into a 21st century Open Distance Learning University. 2. Development of TV channel & FM Radio Networking. 3. Electronic media development to support Open Distance Learning Institution. 4. Online support services for Academic & Administrative functions. The department has established MIS, Internet, LAN, Wireless Network, VSAT Networking and Video Conferencing along with Data Center to achieve the above objectives. This is being done through a phased program under the sponsorship of HEC. MIS department: The heart of the ICT functions is collection, storage, management, distribute and secure all information required by various operational elements of the university. The function of this department is to establish a data center and data applications developed locally, or out sourced. The department shall engage both in developmental and O&M activities for smooth operations. The aim is to provide timely and accurate information for decision making by the respective authorities of AIOU. Internet Department: This department has to provide three major functions namely; internet access to and from AIOU, Web Portal and Email facility for all authorized users of the university. Department shall be responsible for installation and operation of necessary network servers. Additionally the department is required to liaison with appropriate authorities that provide Internet services to AIOU. LAN Department: This unit is responsible to install, operate, and maintain a robust local area network (LAN) at the main campus in Islamabad. It shall utilize all available technologies both wired and wireless to achieve its objective. WAN (VSAT) Department: This unit will be responsible for provision of necessary communication links between AIOU main campus and its offices/centers located all around the country as well as outside country. These links have to be used for information exchange, Internet access, and online teaching and learning purposes. Maintenance and Repair Unit: This unit shall keep all hardware and software used by ICT organization as well as by all officials of AIOU at main campus, in operational condition all the time. In particular, it is essential to keep all the equipment in good working condition when it is out of warranty coverage. E-Learning Department: This department will be responsible maintain all equipment and service related to online delivery of learning contents and provision of video conferencing systems at various locations for live telecast of lectures.
