Introduction: 
It is a known fact that blindness places an immense socioeconomic burden on the individual as well as on the community. Two thirds or more of all blindness is avoidable in that the contributing causes are preventable. Allama Iqbal Open University is endeavoring to contribute in overcoming the avoidable blindness by training Middle Level Eye Care Personnel (MLECP). AIOU in collaboration with Ophthalmology departments of various teaching hospitals and optic shops of Rawalpindi/Islamabad. Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar is offering programmes in Vision Sciences at following three levels.
1. Diploma in Vision Sciences for Ophthalmic Technicians
2. B.Sc Vision Sciences
3. B.Sc Honours in Vision Sciences.

Admission Requirement: 
A candidate having HSSC in Pre-Medical or equivalent with at least second division ü Candidates holding HSSC in Pre-Engineering, ICS and Family and Community Health will be required to complete pre requisite deficiency courses as prescribed by the university, for being eligible for admission. ü Admission will be granted purely on merit. Preference will be given to candidates from backward areas and admission criteria for candidates of following areas would be relaxed upto 35% marks. 1. Balochistan 2. FATA 3. FANA 4. Remote areas of Interior Rural Sindh ü Candidates holding HSSC in Pre-Engineering, ICS and Family and Community Health will be required to complete pre requisite deficiency courses as prescribed by the university, for being eligible for admission. ü Admission will be granted purely on merit. Selection Process: 
The programme will be advertised in national newspaper of wide circulation. ü The admission will be finalized by a selection committee of members from AIOU and National Committee for Vision 2020 as well as members from other study centers can also be invited. The admission would be finalized on the basis of merit. ü There might be an entry test or interview if and when decided by the Selection Committee for Admission.. ü The selected candidates would be informed of their placement in the concerned study center. ü A candidate is required to send complete admission form along with two passport size photos, attested copies of all educational certificates and transcripts at the following address befor the closing date mentioned

Medium of Instruction: 
Medium of instruction for all three levels of the programme is English. Students will have to do all the assignments, practicals and final exam in English except Pakistan Studies and Islamiat.
Instructional material will be provided by the university.
Tutorial support for assistance in study as well as practical will be arranged by the university.
The students will attend tutorial and practical sessions at approved study centers of the university. These centers are established at the Ophthalmology department of different teaching hospitals in concerned regions.
Teaching Methodology: 
Teaching methodology would include both the face-to-face tutorials and distance learning entities. The face to face tutorial would be employed for subjects related to clinical and community ophthalmology and the non.clinical subjects like Pak studies and Islamiat would be taught through purly distance learning. The training is carried out at ophthalmology department of approved study centers of teaching hospitals by registered competent tutors at each level. If a tutorial session is missed by a student, the student can correspond with the tutor to get guidance. The students are informed of their tutor’s name and addresses by the local regional offices of Allama Iqbal Open university, if with in twenty days after receiving the study packs, a student does not receive the tutor’ name and address, he/she should contact the AIOU Regional Director in his/her area. A tutorial of one and a half hour duration for each course, on fortnightly basis for four months in each semester will be held. T
