Dear Students,

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry, Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad. The Department of Chemistry was established in 1998 to offer programmes and courses in Chemistry. After developing courses and establishing research and teaching laboratories, the Department started its MSc and MPhil Chemistry Programmes in 2003, PhD Chemistry in 2005 and BS Chemistry in 2009. The Department is offering its postgraduates programmes in specialization with Organic Chemistry. Currently the Department has also offered BS and MSc Chemistry Programmes in specialization with Inorganic / Analytical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry as well. Right now, Department of Chemistry is situated in University Research Complex building, where we have well equipped state-of-the-art teaching / research laboratories. The Department has the facilities of highly sophisticated instruments i.e. Atomic Absorption, CHNS Analyzer, Electrochemical System, FT-IR, Fluorescence Spectrophotometer, GC/MS, HPLC, Lyophilizer, Magnetic Balance, Refrigerated Centrifuge Machine, Thermal Analyzer, Tube Furnace, UV-Spectrophotometer etc. All the laboratories have fume hoods, rotary evaporators and other necessary equipment. The major areas of research in the Department are Stereoselective Synthesis, Catalysis, Environmental Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Nano Chemistry, Organometallics, Electro Chemistry, Drug Development, Liquid Crystals, Heterocyclic Chemistry and Polymers. It is worth mentioning here that regular qualified PhD faculty of the department is supervising all the research students of the Department.

Our VISION is to build prosperous and progressive Pakistan by providing high quality education to the masses. Our mission is to build an internationally renowned Chemistry department of higher learning in teaching, research and innovation.

The Chemistry courses being offered in the Department are on face-to-face teaching methodology. To facilitate our students, the classes are being held in the evening. Most of the courses are being taught by our regular PhD faculty. The flexibility in the schedule without compromising the quality of education and research is the main priority of the Department. Our flexible schemes of studies are designed to accommodate people already in jobs besides the fresh students.

Department takes pride in providing a second chance for capable working individuals who could not afford the regular education due to financial constraints. Furthermore, acceptance of our students in the best universities / organizations abroad and Pakistan is a matter of satisfaction for the hard working faculty and staff of the Department. Our annual research publications in international reputed impact factor journals and Research Productivity Awards by the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology is recognition of the Department in the scientific community of Pakistan and abroad.
