Health is wealth and proper nutrition is the key to good health. Being a paediatricion, I am involved in health care of the children of various ages. Malnutrition is the major problem underlying almost 50 percent of various diseases. This enormous burden of disease mainly drew my attention in gaining more knowledge about nutrition related health problems.

Nutrition courses are not offered routinely; especially those catering the needs of MBBS doctors are not giving the required input in this very important preventive health discipline. The Nutrition courses offered in the department of Home and Health Sciences of Allama Iqbal Open University are specially designed for health professionals working at various places who can improve their knowledge by studying and working simultaneously. The department is self sufficient in every respect. Prof. Dr. Perveen Liaqat, Chairperson, and all faculty members are always accessible and attentive to help students.

Presently I am working as pediatrician in National Institute of Handicapped where mostly children are mentally retarded. After receiving the masters’ degree, I am equipped with the skill to assess the nutritional requirements and the existing problems of such children. Now I can educate and counsel mothers more precisely about the feeding patterns and modification of their dietary behaviors. Similarly, now I stress more on the preventive aspect of maintaining health and try to guide mothers about the importance of nutrition in child’s life especially when the child is handicapped.
