General Eligibility Criteria
The minimum criteria for admission in this program are:
- An MPhil/MS degree in Applied Linguistics/Linguistics/Translation Studies/Languages (indigenous or foreign) is required for the admission in this program.
- A minimum of 3.0 CGPA or 1st division for semester system students.
- Written test as per AIOU admission policy is mandatory.
- Qualifying the written test conducted by the university (The successful candidates, with minimum marks, will be shortlisted for the interview, and their comprehensive score of the academic qualifications of the candidates, their written test as well as the interview will decide their eligibility for admission to the respective program).
Language Proficiency Criteria
The candidate must fulfill at least one of the following English language proficiency criteria for admission:
- Candidate must have written MPhil thesis in English Language
- Candidate must have obtained a minimum of 6 Band in IELTS test
- Candidate must appear and score at least 60 percent score in university designed English language proficiency test.
Scope of the Program:
PhD degree in Applied Linguistics aims at bridging the long existent gap in the language resource development in indigenous languages and expansion of the field of translation studies specifically in the perspective of recent technological emergence. Applied linguistics as a field may be described as a broad interdisciplinary field of study concerned with solutions to problems or the improvement of situations involving indigenous languages and its users and uses. Applied Linguistics provides the theoretical and applied foundations for the investigation and solution of language-related problems, especially those of language education but also problems of translation and interpretation, lexicography, forensic linguistics and (perhaps) clinical linguistics.
Career Prospects:
PhD graduates in Applied Linguistics may have the following career prospects:
- Attain academic positions at leading universities in their discipline
- Attain positions in other disciplines such as Natural Language Processing, Screen Studies, Political Communications, Policy Studies, embassies, National & Provincial Assemblies.
- Pursue careers in translation, higher education, government agencies, NGOs, international bodies and other institutes nationally or around the globe.
Participate in language, culture and translation projects as freelancers.

The PhD in Applied Linguistics strictly follows the guidelines given by the HEC for PhD program. The program stretches over a period of three to five years. The participants of the program will be required to study six courses as taught component in total, in the span of the first year. The year will be divided into two semesters having three courses each semester. Each course comprises three credit hours, which makes a total of 18 credit hours in the first year of the program. The second and third year entails the preparation of dissertation / thesis, having 12 credit hours.
